At What Point Should I Get a Manager?

Posted by MrDJ in Untagged

MrDJ
Most of the manager's duties and responsibilities come into play once an artist is generating income - especially through a record company association, but also for active local and regional artists who are touring and selling product on their own. Therefore, many people think it isn't really necessary to have a manager until there is an income-producing career to 'manage'.

What to Look for in a Recording Studio

Posted by doodlebug in Untagged

Your band has worked hard, you have a catalog of songs and you've decided that it's time to hit the studio and record some of your tunes and show the world what you can do...so step 1, is finding a studio.

Finding a studio may sound easy, but depending on where you are, it may not be. The first thing you have to do is set a budget for the project. I've worked in studio's that cost anywhere from $25-150 an hour to record in. Just because a  studio is more expensive doesn't necessarily mean that it's better. A lot of the major label studios are huge, and have lots of extra space in them that you'll never use, if you're a normal 4-5 piece band, not that much space is really required, although it may be nice and look good, it may not be worth that extra $50 an hour.

Do I Need a Music Producer?

Posted by MrDJ in Untagged

MrDJ
This article is meant to explain and clarify what you can expect, both creatively and financially, from hiring a producer to assist you in your goal.

One of the ways a producer can be most useful to you is by providing an objective ear. In the studio, it can be difficult to gain perspective as you create. A typical example is vocal performance. Your producer can recognize if you need to try it again and guide you through phrasing, pitch, emotion, etc. A good producer will also know to stop you when you've nailed it.

Do I Need a Manager?

Posted by MrDJ in Untagged

MrDJ
This is interesting on whether you need a manger or not?

Managers become necessary once you've got a record deal and you need an advocate to represent your interests at the different departments of a record company. They help to coordinate efforts and get maximum results at radio, retail, and publicity. Many labels will want an artist to have a high-powered manager before a record is released and will often recommend top managers.

Copyright Ownership of Your Songs and Sound Recordings

Found another article that may be of interest written by Galen Eagle Bull on 12-11-2006, an Attorney with a specialization in Entertainment Law and freelance writer.

My band recorded a self-funded EP. Recently, our drummer quit and is now telling us that we can’t use his drum tracks on the EP. What can we do?

I’ll give you the short answer and then explain. If your drummer was a co-writer on any of the songs, you can continue to use the songs as long as you share the profits with him as a co-author. Regarding the EP sound recording, you can still use his drum parts if you pay him a pro rata share of the proceeds. Or, you can go back into the studio and re-record his drum parts with a different drummer and as a result, you won’t owe the ex-drummer any proceeds from the sound recording.

How to Break into the Music Industry

I found this article on getting started in the music industry. I thought it was interesting:

How to Break into the Music Industry
by Maria Palma (10-3-2007)

If you ask most children what they want to be when they grow up, most of them will tell you that they want to be a "firefighter", "police officer", or even "President". Then there are kids who say that they just want to be famous. Well, certainly the music industry is a place where many a star has been born. The music industry is a billion dollar industry. Who wouldn't want a piece of that action?

Whether you want to be a songwriter, producer, engineer, manager, or agent - if you want to get your foot in the door and be someone who is in it for the long-run, then I think it's important to have the business and interpersonal skills to face the challenges that this industry will bring. You can get these much-needed skills by attending a music industry school.
